“My husband is sick for the last two years, his right hand is paralysed. So he has not been able to work. My son and his wife complain about his condition. But what can that poor man do? So I work all day and support my family. Recently, my youngest daughter got married and we are several lakhs in debt. Among the other items in the dowry was a motorcycle. For my first two daughter we didn’t have to give anything, maybe just bicycle and a watch as gift to the groom. They agreed to whatever they received. So things are difficult. There is always some ruckus at home. Sometimes I sit with my husband and we talk about what has happened of our lives. He says, ‘You have suffered a lot because of me, because I can’t work and earn money. What will we do? This was what was written in our destiny. Now let’s just wait. One day, when we are no more everything will be fine.’ ” (Kosila Mahara, Govindapur, Dhanusa)
