A few weeks ago [February 2021], I travelled to the south-west to spend time with communities that live in the margins of poverty and discrimination at many levels. Many of their personal stories are heartbreaking and progress very slow. As the political turmoil and the pandemic adds pressure to the already vulnerable lives of many families, the stories I will share, I hope will bring to light how communities that have been oppressed based on social structures of class, caste and ethnicity are the most affected by even the smallest disruptions in their livelihood. In doing so, I hope we can also begin to see how these stories are not only ‘sad’ but also stories of courage and undying resilience to continue fighting with a life of adversities. I am thankful to ICCO for choosing to partner with SON in this project #RightToEarnALiving.
