Sunita Singh Kholigaun 2, Birendranagar
(Part 2/3) “After the first year of our marriage, my husband went to Malaysia. He got sick with Jaundice and the company relieved him of his duties so he had to return home. He had bought some money so we acquired this 5 meters of land, built this shelter and moved here to Surkhet. My husband started selling rugs and carpets. He would roll them up and carry it to the market and walk around town. He could not find anything better so he had to satisfy himself selling carpets. He knew if he didn’t carry the carpets we would have nothing to eat. We were somehow managing. Other than the scarcity at home, the thing that worried me the most was his drinking. He started getting sick frequently. I do not know why he drank so much. Maybe he was not happy to come back from Malaysia. Maybe he was trying to stop but could not. Maybe he was not happy with selling carpets and wandering around town. But I never complained. He drank every day. Every time I told him, he would tell me to stop lecturing. He would say, ‘I drink with the money I earn. I will leave you but I will never stop drinking’. And I would tell him I was not concerned with the money he was wasting but I was worried about his health and his life. We had a son already. My mother in law would tell me that since I was his wife it was my duty to make him a better person. And I would wonder how that was possible. All I could do was tell him politely to stop drinking. And I did. But he would never listen.”
