Sachyam Sharma Surkhet
“It took me 7 years to complete my Bachelors. Even so, I barely passed. I took my life and the privileges of living with my parents for granted. My priority always revolved around escaping reality. I did not have much regard for education, my parents or my responsibilities as a person. A reckless decision in my life at the time became a reason for a lot of hurt in the family. And it made me change. I started prioritizing things. As I started seeking spirituality, my wants were not to be the centre for the things I did anymore. And luckily as I was working on changing my life, I got an offer to work with underprivileged children. For that, I had to leave the comforts of my home and the easy lifestyle where I got everything I asked for. When I came to Surkhet and started living with the children, the change I experienced was immense. Their stories were heartbreaking and their misfortunes unimaginable. My childhood was entirely different. I had people who loved me and provided for me. I was born with abundant opportunities and proper schooling but I had taken it for granted. Many of these children were deprived of the family love and a normal childhood. Having spent a few years with them, today, they have become family. They have taught me a sense of responsibility. Today, it is not only about changing my life, it is also about changing theirs.”
